New Study Shows Ways to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joshua_Daly] Joshua Daly Results from Japanese research show that changes in blood glucose levels may prevent the onset of type 2 Diabetes. As you may well know, Type 2 Diabetes afflicts many people in the United States as well as around the globe. According to HealthDay, Type 2 diabetes often occurs because a person’s cells no longer respond to the hormone insulin, which is crucial for lowering blood glucose (sugar) levels. Before a person becomes diabetic, his or her body tries to compensate for the increasing resistance to insulin by upping the amount of insulin secreted and the mass of insulin-secreting cells (beta cells) in the pancreas. The study took diabetic mice and fed them high fat diets, which reportedly led to an increase in the beta cell mass. HealthDay reports, the team focused on mice with only one copy of a gene called GCK, which produces a kind of molecular sensor that gauges blood glucose levels. These mice showed little increase in beta cell mass, compared with normal mice. Healthday states A molecule known as insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS2) was shown to be an important mediator of the beta cell mass increase after GCK first sensed increased blood glucose levels, the researchers said. Future studies are needed to determine the mechanism linking GCK and IRS2. The researchers hope that this will lead to new strategies of increasing beta cell mass as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Hopefully these studies will spurn more enlightened research and lead to a much needed cure for type 2 diabetes. 5 Steps to Get to Know about Your Ancestors

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Adwina D. Jackson It is always fun to discover who are our grandparents, great grandparents, etc, especially if they were popular and smart people in their times. If you want to satisfy your curiosity about your ancestors, these are the steps you can follow. Reveal all the secrets you want to know about your family by: 1. Getting Started in Genealogy Do you know that theres a study of family history? Yes, its called genealogy. It will unlock the door to what your family has lived through and provide you with a look to the world that they were exposed to. Youll find that this is a very rewarding experience to be in. 2. Working on the Living Members of Your Family Your family is a great source for genealogy research. The first thing that you will want to do is to work on names of ancestors by interviewing your families. What youll do next is to try to construct a family tree based on the names that have been given to you. In these interviews, you can also ask anything you want to know about your ancestors. For example, your relatives perhaps can tell you about the cities in which your family members grew up in or whether someone was in war. These are informational pieces that you can use to begin your journey into the past. 3. Finding Sources for Genealogy Research Be creative in finding information. Using the web is absolutely a helpful effort. For example, if you learn that your mothers grandfather was in the military, you may be able to find information based on this on the web. You could use old military records or even find info about something that he did heroically. These small pieces will open up the puzzle of your genealogy. 4. Taking Genealogy Research Further As mentioned before, using the internets wide resources is very advantageous. There are also other ways to take the research: using the online databases provided by church organizations, using message boards, joining forums, and writing or looking for genealogy blogs. You probably couldnt find the information you have been looking for by doing these, but at least they provide you with good advice on how to find your ancestors. If you become stuck and really want to track your familys history, consider calling on a professional genealogical individual to help you in the pursuit. Often, they provide more information because they have the necessary resources already established to help you. 5. Preserving Your Genealogy Research When you have taken time to do all the searches and collected so much information about your ancestors, it is now time to preserve all the data safely. Probably the best way for you to do this is to secure the information in a genealogy software program. This program will not only offer you a place to store all valuable information that you have learned so far but also help you get more solutions to your needs. Your genealogy means everything to you and you must provide the best preservation for it. About the Author: Adwina Jackson is a working mother of a gorgeous young boy. Safe Diet Pills

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Thomas Morva A nagging question in the minds of dieters is how safe these diet pills are amidst reports of the side effects and health hazards these drugs pose against their users health. Studies reveal that diet and weight loss pills can have a significant effect on a users blood pressure, overall health and metabolism. Most of these diet pills have unpleasant side effects, promote drug dependency and interfere with other medicines we take. They are not designed to control obesity depending on a persons health status, the perceived advantages may be outweighed by perceived risks. At best, these pills should be viewed as short term aids for the severely overweight dieters. Clinical studies reveal that to be effective, these diet pills should be used together with a comprehensive weight loss program consisting of an exercise regimen and effective diet plan. Those who are obese, overweight or at risk of weight-related health problems such as diabetes may be able to use diet pills safely. On the other hand, those who suffer irregular heart beats, angina, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, and glaucoma eye disease — and especially those who are pregnant — are more likely to be in danger even if they use safe diet pills. Typically, unsafe diet pills and weight loss programs work on metabolism while safe diet pills work by blocking the absorption of enzymes in the body that convert digested fat into tissues of fat. Safe diet pills may help weight watchers lose those unwanted pounds. Available over the counter, non prescription safe diet pills aid in rapid weight loss and often provide added bursts of energy. Safe diet pills may help you look and feel good and provide you with more energy to enjoy life. Get Personal For Bridesmaid Gifts

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By L Hayes Instead of searching for unusual gifts for your bridesmaids, consider making classic, timeless gifts more personal. Jewelry and silver keepsakes are always appropriate. They become more meaningful when you choose something a little different or personal for each friend. Here are a few tips on how to make your bridesmaid gifts more memorable. Consider selecting a particular jewelry designer or style. You might buy earrings for one friend, a necklace for another, pretty hair clips for a third. Have silver items such as compacts, picture frames, key chains or julep cups engraved with your bridesmaids’ initials. Monogrammed cosmetic or jewelry bags also make wonderful gifts. Accessories for their wedding outfits are another possibility. Be sure to choose items they will wear or use again, such as dainty handbags in different colors or luxurious shawls. You may also make custom gift packages for each friend. Fill a beautiful box with things she’ll love, such as bath soaps, gels, and lotions. Consider making a gift box that includes teas, a teapot and an assortment of honeys. You might treat everyone to a trip to a day spa for manicures and pedicures or massages. These type of ideas also apply to the gifts the groom selects for his groomsmen. He might buy each one a different pair of cuff links, a tie or a cashmere scarf. He could have heavy glass mugs, money clips or leather coasters engraved with their initials. Or he might take everyone for a round of golf or another activity that they will all enjoy. Or you can leave it to an artist to come up with a creative gift for bridesmaids. Consider hand-painted wine glasses and champagne flutes. Intricate designs include yellow roses, red roses, purple grapes and holly berries. From start to finish, the process takes about 10 hours. Most of that is kiln time. It takes about an hour to paint each glass. Lead-free pigments make the glasses safe for drinking. Here are a few other ideas: PICTURE OF JOY - Have your group’s photo printed on the front of a canvas photo album. WHAT’S HER HANDLE? - Give Bermuda bags - each with a different panel. CALENDAR GIRLS - Have custom calendars made with each month showing pictures of you and your friends. STAR SEARCH - Give your bridesmaids necklaces featuring a different zodiac sign. FILL ‘EM UP - Fill embroidered travel or cosmetic bags with goodies. STAMP OF APPROVAL - Put name, address or initials on chrome embossers. Finally, take time to pick gifts for your friends. It’s a rare time you can show them how much you appreciate their support. Try to get them something that is practical, not just for use on your wedding day. To save time, give a similar thing to everyone. You can give them black photo totes, for example, but to make them more personal, put different pictures in each one. Do not wait until the last minute; it takes time for things to be personalized. The best way to make sure your bridesmaids will love their gifts is to personalize them. Think engraved or something personal..chandelier earrings, necklaces and bracelets in both modern and vintage trends. Even before your wedding, they stood by your side, so say thanks to your bridesmaids with gifts as personal as they are unique. Comic Books - Fantastic Four Flashback

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Michael Russell In this article we’re going to discuss another Marvel comics creation that became a very big hit, The Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four have to be the strangest bunch of characters in comic books history and have certainly been involved in some of the most amazing adventures and found themselves in the most impossible situations. The Fantastic Four first hit the comic book scene in 1961. Its appeal was probably rooted in the fact that this was a family facing the kind of problems that no family should ever have to face. At one time the Fantastic Four were actually normal people just like you and I. As a matter of fact Reed Richards and Sue Storm were engaged when the comic first started and then got married a few years later. Johnny Storm is Sue’s brother. The only odd one in the group was Ben Grimm who was a friend of the family but ironically was also the heart and soul of this team. The event that took place that transformed this once normal family into the Fantastic Four was an experimental rocket ship that they had manned passing through a storm of cosmic rays. After this event, strange things began to happen to the passengers, things that would turn them into four of the greatest super heroes of all time. Each one was affected differently. This of course was by design as it gave each one certain powers that when combined with each other made the Fantastic Four something that was greater than the sum of their parts. Reed Richards underwent a transformation that literally turned his body into an elastic band. He could stretch and squeeze himself into places that no normal man could get himself into. This came in quite handy when trying to break into security buildings. Richards took on the name Mr. Fantastic. Between his scientific knowledge and his new ability there wasn’t much Mr. Fantastic couldn’t do. Sue Storm, soon to be Sue Richards, Gained the ability to become invisible. This was also great for sneaking into buildings and also for surprising her foes. She took on the name The Invisible Girl, then later changed it to The Invisible Woman. Reed and Sue took on the role of parents of the group while Sue’s brother Johnny became the spoiled child. Johnny Storm gained the ability to create fire from his fingertips. He took on the name Human Torch. His power was a great weapon and many times got the group out of dangerous situations. Finally, there is Ben Grimm who got the worst of the deal. He simply turned into a hideous looking monster known as The Thing. But Grimm was very strong and as previously mentioned was really the heart and soul of this group. He was the one who kept the others from missing the big picture. He was the glue that held this group together, especially when Johnny was acting like a spoiled child. These four went on to become one of the most famous teams of super heroes in the history of comic books which later spawned a cartoon show and a feature film. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Comic Books ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Comic-Books—Fantastic-Four-Flashback&id=143096 cheap tramadol without prescription pharmacy tramadol hcl dosing 1 online order tramadol hoodia diet pill buy tramadol now

Sewing Tips - How To Sew And Recycle Old Pot Holders

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Marian Lewis Is your kitchen drawer full of old pot holders that are so scorched and worn looking that you would never want anyone else to see them? Well, don’t throw them away yet! Here is a sewing tip to revitalize them. Try this “how to sew” sewing lesson and recycle all of your old pot holders by sewing a new cover for them. This sewing technique is a good sewing tip to cover other items in your home, too. Sew a cover for your comforters, quilts, placemats and pillows to spark up your home dec. Here is how to sew a new cover to recycle your old pot holders and make them look brand new again. Use some fabric scraps from your stash to match your kitchen decor or look through the remnants at your local fabric store. Cut off the old pot holder loop or ring if there is one. Lay out the pot holder on some paper and draw a pattern around it adding a 1/2 inch seam allowance all around the shape of the pot holder. You can save this pattern for future pot holder covers. Label it so you know what the pattern is. Using the pattern, cut 2 layers of fabric to make the pot holder cover. You can use 2 different fabrics if you like. Here are a couple of ways that you can sew this. Method 1: Place the 2 right sides of the fabric together. Sew a 1/2 inch seam around 3 sides of the cover plus go around the corners on the 4th side leaving an opening to insert the pot holder. Press the seams open. Turn the cover right side out. Insert the pot holder in the cover. Slip stitch or machine stitch the opening closed. Add a fabric loop or curtain ring if you prefer to hang up your pot holder. Method 2: Sandwich the pot holder between the two layers of fabric with the right sides of the fabric facing out. Pin to hold all layers together. Use your zipper foot to stitch close to the edge of the pot holder all around. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch all around. Use bias tape or self or contrast fabric strips to bind the edges of the pot holder. If you like to hang your pot holders, form a loop at the end of the binding to extend from the edge of the pot holder. Note: You can quilt these pot holders if you like, however, it really isn’t necessary. Experiment with some of your sewing machine’s decorative stitches. Extra sewing tip: Pot holder covers are a great way to use up some of your embroidery or stitching samples that you have in your stash. Give them as gifts or make up some great bazaar items. An extra, extra sewing tip: Cut up that old mattress pad to use as the “batting” for some new pot holders and placemats. Try it! It just makes sense! 2006 Marian Lewis - All Rights Reserved 1st Step To Sewing Success Marian Lewis is a sewing instructor and the creator of an amazing new fitting method for hard-to-fit sewing folks. Folk Medicine - The Natural Solution

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Eric Cho Long before orthodox medicine took center stage in the health care practices around the world people who were sick used to visit different kind of doctors. These doctors were not the steth-wielding, tech-savvy, white-coated medical geniuses of today. Mostly, they were bearded, wizened and gnarled humans looking less like physicians and more like witches or wizards. But they were revered, loved and even feared because of one particular skill they possessed the healing touch. In the early days of civilization, a vast majority of people were cut off from formal medical care. Competent physicians were a luxury, to be enjoyed only by the super-rich and royalty. For everyone else, there was the local witch-doctor who was respected for his or her in-depth knowledge of folk medicine. This was the man or woman who treated everything from boils to gangrene, from cesarean to malaria and even small pox. What is astonishing is that many of these so-called doctors effectively cured their patients. What is even more interesting is that these medicines have lost none of their charms with the passage of time and more and more of them are finding their rightful place in mainstream medicines. Remember how your grandma used to give you wild cherry bark for cough, or boil the twigs and leaves of red cedar to cure your cold? Well, thats folk medicine! If you were to ask your grandma how she learnt those techniques, shed draw a blank! These unofficial health-related practices were passed on informally by word of mouth and were developed through observation and experimentation. Illnesses ranging from the common cold and sore throat to warts, cancer, malaria, impotence and arthritis are said to be treated through folk medicine. Folk medicine largely depended on the use of natural materials such as herbs, plant roots, trees, barks, fruits, insects and food items. Therefore, these practitioners paid a lot of attention to botany. But the advent of modern medicine saw a decline in folk medicine as these rustic practices were put under the microscope, dissected and then discarded as worthless. One more reason contributed to the decline of folk medicine. Folk medicine started its downward slide with the advent of magical healing powers. Seedy people on the lookout for a few fast bucks were successful in capitalizing on the trust and faith of large sections of the society. Once their ruse came to light, people began to lose faith in folk medicine. Soon folk medicine was relegated to a gray area between orthodox medicine and quackery. However, as more and more people have started to realize, there is a wealth of knowledge in traditional folk medicine. As people have started adopting the holistic way of life, there is a struggle to re-invent the precious folk medicine of yore. In recent years, the folk medicine of indigenous people is becoming more popular. Some examples of folk medicines that we use in our daily life are: Garlic - to reduce blood cholesterol levels Chinese acupuncture - to treat blood clotting and migraine The juice of neem leaves - to treat malaria Poultice - to treat infected wounds Turmeric - to treat bee or wasp stings Today, amazingly more than two-thirds of the worlds population rely on the healing powers of folk medicine at some point of their lives. For many nothing else is available or affordable. For some, nothing else is acceptable. And for a very few, nothing else works.
