This Fall, Give Your Trees Some TLC

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Jeff Hansen They add character to neighborhoods, beauty to rolling hills and depth to flat prairies. Whether they have guarded your home for a few years or even for several decades, your trees need some extra attention this autumn. A few simple treatments make a big difference when spring emerges and your trees are already strong, beautiful and healthy. Inspection Time Before winter sets in, walk your property and perform a visual inspection of all of your trees, both young and old. The purpose of your inspection is to identify potential diseases, or growth patterns that may lead to damage as wind, snow and ice arrive in the area. Examine the trunk and branches of each tree. Notice their growth patterns, and how each branch is attached to the main trunk. One of the biggest offenders which leads to weak trees is a co-dominant stem. Co-dominant stems are common in several varieties of trees including Bradford Pears and some Birch species. While they pose a big danger, theyre relatively easy to spot with the naked eye. Look at the main trunk of the tree, and search for any branches that look like theyre competing with the main trunk. Visually, a co-dominant stem will appear as a fork-like growth off the main trunk. It will be larger than the trees actual branches, and typically grow vertically alongside the trunk. Co-dominant stems pose a great danger to the tree itself, and to your property. Because this stem is competing with the trunk, the tree is weakened, making it susceptible to split under pressure of wind, snow and ice, and take the tree tumbling down with it. Co-dominant stems should be removed immediately to ensure strength, stability and future growth. For a young tree, you may use a pruning tool or small saw to remove the stem at its base, outside the branch collar. More mature, larger co-dominant stems may require a heavy saw, or the assistance of a professional since removing branches from large trees can be a dangerous task. Keep in mind that you can kill a tree if proper pruning is not performed. Before making any cuts, check the ANSI standards for tree trimming which can be found online at www.ansi.org. Examine young trees for damage from lawn mowers and other gardening tools that may have occurred throughout the season. Small nicks attract disease and insects, which inhibit proper growth and strength. PVC pipe or fiberglass tree wraps placed around the base of young trees can help you avoid damage. Also, be sure to remove any weeds that grow within a young trees dripline, as they are fierce competitors for water and nutrients. Older trees should be closely monitored. While many appear strong and stately, their sheer weight and size can create a huge liability that may not be covered by insurance if they fall on your property or your neighbors. Look for areas in the tree that seem to have heavy growth and foliage. Examine your older trees for dead bark, cankers or lesions on the trunk or branches, or wilted, mis-shapen or discolored leaves. If any of these is present, your tree may need special care. Several online resources, including the Tree Care Industry of America (www.tcia.org) and the International Society of Arborculture (www.isa-arbor.com) websites include tips and frequently asked questions about caring for your trees. Pruning and Mulching: Important for Healthy Trees The list of tree damage and disease is a long one, but dont worry: many of your trees ailments can be alleviated by the simple tasks of pruning and mulching. One important step in preparing your trees for winter is deadwooding, which refers to the removal of dead wood. It is often easiest to identify deadwood during autumn since the entire trees architecture is clear. Deadwooding maintains a trees structural integrity, reduces risk of insect infestation, and lessens its chance of damage when wind, snow and ice bear down on dead sections of the tree. Another essential task is thinning, which refers to the removal of excess foliage and growth from trees interiors. Like deadwooding, thinning reduces weight on branches, which can minimize winter storm damage. Thinning also promotes wind circulation within the trees canopies to reduce fungal growth. Aside from pruning, autumn mulching is crucial because it helps prepare trees for the upcoming winter months. Mulch is not only attractive, but it also helps trees absorb nutrients, moderates soil temperature during the frigid winter months, and increases water retention. Dont skip fall mulch! Its just as important to mulch now and freshen it up in the spring. There are many types of mulch on the market, but not all of them are created equal. A recent study performed by the Ohio State University Agricultural Research and Development Center concluded that the best mulch for your trees is premium blended organic mulch because it produces more microbial nitrogen than non-composted mulch, making the nitrogen more available to the plant. In fact, absorption of nutrients in organic mulch is 20 to 25 percent higher than typical bagged mulch. Before applying mulch to trees and shrubs, remove all weeds and grass from the areas to be covered. Rake two to four inches of mulch into a flattened doughnut shape over these areas, keeping the mulch at least six inches away from tree trunks. Form a moat around the base of the tree or plant to help catch water, and leave a small gap between the mulch and the edge of the surrounding lawn. So during the next few weeks, look around your yard and examine your trees for signs of disease and damage. Even if your trees seem healthy and strong, they may still need pruning and mulching before winter. If you see something that seems unusual, or is a bit more than you can handle, call your local licensed arborist for diagnosis and treatment. A little extra attention will prepare your trees not only for ice storms, but will also ensure their glorious beauty when winter finally thaws. A Yarn about Threads

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Bev McClune Depending on the project, you want to quilt, the thread types available each have something special to offer. The best way to learn about threads is to play with different ones and discover the effects each will have in various situations. One important tip to keep in mind is you should always be able to break the thread by pulling on it between your two hands. If you cannot break it, do not use it for quilting! It is actually too strong and in time will wear and perhaps cut through your quilt. Put it to use in the garden to support your plants instead. Threads come in different weights. Unlike when you step on a scale, a smaller number actually signifies that the thread is thicker. Remember, the smaller the number, the thicker the thread and the higher the number, the finer the thread. A spool of thread that has 30 wt on it is going to be thicker than a spool of thread that has 40 wt written on it. Keep in mind that needle sizes work like dress sizes which is the opposite of how thread works. The lower the size on the needle the smaller or thinner it is, and the lower the weight of thread the thicker it is. Ply is another word used to describe thread. A ply is one strand of thread and one-ply thread will naturally be a very weak thread. Three-ply thread is three strands of thread twisted together and will be a stronger thread. It is important to consider the characteristics of thread types when choosing which to use in your quilting project. Cotton thread is a natural fibre and has been around forever. Commonly used in many piecing and quilting projects it is available in various weights. Polyester thread is a man made fibre. It is quite a strong thread. Rayon thread is generally considered a natural fibre. It is also a strong thread. When used in quilting it has a beautiful shine that looks a little like silk. Metallic thread is a man made fibre. Historically this thread was actually fine wires of gold, silver and copper. Nowadays the fibre content of metallic thread is not usually so exotic but rather polyester or a polyester and nylon blend. Silk thread is a natural fibre (and probably one of the most expensive threads). It looks exquisite when used for quilting designs on quilts especially in traditional quilting. Monofilament is a man made fibre. Many people despise this thread but it can be absolutely tops in many circumstances. It comes as 100% nylon or 100% polyester. The nylon is preferable to the polyester as the nylon is very fine, soft and flexible almost like hair. It is not like fishing line! If the monofilament thread you have tried before is thick and hard like fishing line throw the stuff away and make sure you buy a quality monofilament thread from your quilt store. The polyester seems not as fine as the nylon and perhaps has a little less stretch to it. A good quality monofilament will be easy, flexible and soft to use. If you tried monofilament thread in the past and given up on it do give it another try! With a quality monofilament thread, you will find that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. 1. It comes in clear and smoke colour. The clear is good on light fabrics (e.g. pastels and medium colours) while the smoke works well on darker colours. 2. It is great to use in the ditch, around appliqus and embroidery, etc. Wherever this thread is used, it is almost invisible and is very comforting when you are learning to quilt a quilt, especially when stitching in the ditch. If you happen to oops out of the ditch on any colour of fabric, it is not noticeable. This makes it an ideal thread for beginner machine quilters. Straying from the ditch will leave an obvious sign if using any other type of thread. 3. It is smart choice of thread when you want to quilt designs on many different coloured fabrics. It blends beautifully with the fabric, which is better than trying to choose the correct tone on tone colour of thread for every different coloured fabric you wish to quilt. 4. Do be aware that you need to be careful when using the iron near these monofilament threads, as they are a little heat sensitive (the nylon is more sensitive than the polyester). Generally, it is not necessary to put an iron anywhere near a quilted quilt so this should not present a major problem. Now that you have decided on what thread you will use heres a final tip. There are mainly two different methods of winding thread on to the spool parallel and cross-wound. Cross-wound threads behave better when placed on a horizontal spool pin. Parallel wound threads behave best when placed on a vertical spool pin. To prevent the thread from twisting and knotting, you may need to place parallel wound threads on a thread stand, placed a small distance to the back of the machine. The Women Issue

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Michael Tummillo The following message entitled THE WOMAN ISSUE is a study for those who truly desire to examine what Scripture says on a very controversial subject: the role of women in the Church. This would make a great bible study or forward the message to church leadership. We will be using The Law of Scriptural Interpretation: every Scripture must be interpreted in light of other Scriptures on the same subject; it must harmonize with all other verses used as we compare spiritual with spiritual, (1 Cor.2:13). Ready? Here we go! I’m often asked my perspective on the role of women in the Church. My response? I think women should be silent…unfortunately, God does not seem to agree with me (Note to self: Serve God, but NOT as a consultant). Many denominations forbid women to teach, preach, or even testify to the grace of God in their lives. Some groups may let women teach other women, but there remain legions of Jesus-loving women who feel a fire burning within themselves to share their relationship with God with anyone who will listen. Yet they are silenced by their denomination’s interpretation of the Scriptures, or by their manmade traditions. Let’s take a look at the two verses typically addressed to support the interpretation that women are to be silent, 1 Corinthians 14:34-36; 1 Timothy 2:11,12. Paul was not expressing his own opinion in these two verses. Whose commands did he say he was expressing? See 1 Corinthians 14:37,38. Was Paul a sexist, as some say? After all, he never married (1 Corinthians 7:25-40). He advises celibacy because of v. 26, the persecution of the church atthe time. Also, being single gives one the freedom to devote oneself entirely to God. See Hebrews 13:4, 1 Timothy 3:1-7, and Titus 1:5-10. If Paul was the President of the He-Man-Woman-Hater’s Club, or was an advocate that all ministers be celibates, he would have said so. See Romans 16:1,2. Note the word “servant,” from the Greek, diakonos…deacon or deaconess, in English. Paul instructed the men and women in Rome to ASSIST her in her work. See Romans 16:3,4. Priscilla is mentioned BEFORE her husband, something not typically done in Middle Eastern culture. Read v.6 about Mary, also a hard-working “servant” (deaconess). See Romans 16:12, these two girls served the Body, too. See Romans 16:13…referring to an important woman, or a hard-working servant to the Body? In Ephesians 5:21-33, Paul illustrates how marriage illustrates the Church. The Body of Christ being a lovely young woman, a living organism, not an organization, to be structured and departmentalized. This Bride is awaiting the day she can look into the loving eyes of her Bridegroom’s precious face, the Lord Jesus. He describes the Body, with its many parts, every one of them necessary for the good of the whole. See Colossians 3:19…does this sound like a sexist Woman-hater? When we read 1 Corinthians 11:13, at first glance, it sure looks like the Scripture intends for men to be “over’ women. Looks like it. But when we read 1 Corinthians 11:3, we see plainly that a man is head of but ONE woman, his wife! (Sorry, ladies, God’s plan, not mine! Read on…we’re about to discuss submission. I assure you, you’ll like it. God has only your best interests at heart). See Ephesians 5:21. Here the Church is admonished to submit to one another. The Church gets hung up on v.22, “wives, submit to your own husbands” and v.23, “the husband being head of the wife, as Christ is Head of the Church.” We fellas tend to skim over v.25, however, the part about “giving ourselves up (dying)” for her. Gulp! Dying? Literally, if necessary. Most men would bravely say that they would lay down their lives for their lady. Ok, guys, you’ll die for her. Will you LIVE for her, too, laying aside the things that mean most to you for the sake of your marriage? See, marriage is a conscious decision to put to death “self.” No more “I, Me, or Mine.” You’re ONE flesh now. “You,” singular, are now “you,” plural. By “submission,” does the Scripture imply that we should lord over each other, or get along, in love? See 1 Corinthians 11:3 in comparison to Phil 2:5-9. As Jesus did, it is an act of WILL to take a subordinate position for the good of the whole. A lesson for the Church: Submission = POWER! When we read Ephesians 2:4-6, we see that Jesus is not UNDER the Father…He’s at His right hand, EQUAL! See John 17:21. Jesus prayed that the Church would be “one.” Do you see how the anti-woman interpretation BINDS instead of loosens the female segment of the Church? In John 8:32, Jesus declared, “And they shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Religion, literally interpreted means “a return to bondage.” Yes, it’s the traditions of man that make the Word of God of no effect (Mark 7:13). See Galatians 3:28 and 1 John 3:2. No male or female? All of us referred to as ’sons’ (translates as children, even adopted children). Are male children any more significant than females? Even in 1 Peter 3:6, though we see that Sarah obeyed Abraham, did she not have a right to speak her mind? Of course she did. She wasn’t his slave. Read Genesis 16:5,6. Did Sarai (Sarah) get her way? Yes.In fact, Chapters 16-21 are an account of their disagreement. And her husband gave in! In fact, in Genesis 21:10-12, God actually told Abe to listen to his wife. See 1 Samuel 1. Hannah spoke her mind, too. See 1 Samuel 25:32,33 and see how Abigail reasons with King David. You go, girls! See Ephesians 5:24. Read the phrase “in everything?” Christians, let’s resist the temptation to take an isolated text to build a doctrine. If what a spouse commands you to do is a sin, don’t do it (James 4:17)! We must obey God rather than man (Acts 5:29). Filter that which is questionable through the Scriptures. For those who are looking for a reason to leave their spouse, read 1 Corinthians 7:15 in relation to1 Peter 3:1-7. The ball seems to fall in the court of the one who considers themselves more spiritual to “win the soul” (mind, will, emotions) of the other by their godliness. The Greek word for submit is hupotasso, to submit oneself to another. Willfully! In 1 Cor 16:16 and Ephesians 5:21,22, the disciples were encouraged to submit to one another. Submission does NOT equal slavery. They should try to please each other as much as possible, avoid disputes, contentions, divisions. Better to love than to be right. See 1 Corinthians 14:34-36. In Greek, there’s only one word for “man”, none for husbands. Same with “woman.” One word; none for wife. Verse 34 is not referring to ALL women, just wives. See verse 35. “Let the wives keep silent in the assemblies…let them ask their husbands at home…” See 1 Timothy 2:11-15. Paul is referring only to wives, referring to learning and asking questions (1 Cor 14:35;1 Tim 2:11). The Greek word to be used is gyne, meaning “wife,” not “woman.” See 1 Corinthians 11:5. Was Paul so illogical as to tell girls they could pray or prophesy in the 11th Chapter but tell them to be quiet in the 14th? See Acts 2:16-18 in relation to Joel 2:28. Sons AND daughters, it says! See Acts 1:13,14. It refers to 120 PEOPLE in the upper room. Verse 14 specifically states that they ALL joined together, “along with the women” constantly in prayer. Upper room? It may as well have referred to aliving room, an auditorium…anywhere, including your next Christian assembly! See Acts 10. Peter went to the house of Cornelius, upon the Lord’s instructions (v.19-20). Cornelius had been told by an angel to send for Peter (v. 4-6). Verse 24 says Cornelius ‘had called together his relatives and close friends.’ Do you suppose there were any females among his friends and family, too? Of course! The Holy Spirit showed up, Peter preached, and the whole crowd was water baptized, women, too. Sounds like quite a church service! See Luke 1:39-42 and notice how Elizabeth prophesied. Mary does the same in v. 46-55. Also in Luke, read Chapter 2:36-38 about Anna, a prophetess. See Acts 18:26. Some would say, “Well, ok…maybe a woman can teach ONE man but no more than one!” Really? That’s like saying it’s OK to steal one dollar, but not ten! Read Acts 18:26 again the three were gathered in His name! Two guys, one girl. They were BEING the Church, and not a stained glass window or padded pew in sight. See Psalms 68:11. The Hebrew word translated “company” is feminine…it means “women.” Guess what, guysthe first to go tell about the resurrected Jesus? A woman evangelist (John 20:18)! See 1 Corinthians 11:3-16. Wear a veil? Is it binding everywhere for all time? Paul does not say it’s irreverent or displeasing to God for a woman’s head to be uncovered. If he had, there’d be no escape from this command and, ladies, you’d have to cover up. When we read 1 Corinthians 11:3-7, we can see the cultural propriety as to why men take their hats OFF in our culture when entering a church. It’s cultural manners, not scriptural command, and we do this inside any public building. Well, we used to. Jewish men COVER their heads in synogogue. Muslims take off shoes. “Tradition!” The veil, or covering, referred to in these verses refers to the acknowledging of someone visibly present, a man’s ‘head.’ The women didn’t dishonor God by not covering her head, but her husband who was visibly present. The veil symbolized subjection. It’s why brides wear veils still today, even in our culture. So, in short, it’s: 1. not irreverant 2. not displeasing to God 3. the custom of the day, wise to abide by such for harmony’s sake 4. Paul’s appeal to naturalness in hair-style (maybe he liked long hair?) See 1 Timothy 2:9,10 and 1 Peter 3:1-5 in light of today’s fashions. Fashion has a greater power than modesty. This basic principle is involved: don’t spend so much time on OUTWARD appearance…it’s your spirit-condition that matters! Don’t give the appearance of evil or cause another’s mind to wander into the gutter. Mature Christians can show their maturity by not condemning those who do not know better; set a godly example-don’t heap rules upon new disciples. A famous evangelist once said, “that first glance is ‘free’after that, we’re accountable.” Folks, don’t cause a brother or sister to stumble just because you think you look great in that certain outfit. See Deuteronomy 22:5. Basically, a woman should be feminine whether in slacks or a dress. The bible doesn’t specify. Again, stay away from traditions that bind to rulesrather than to a relationship to God. In closing, don’t let tradition or legalism get in the way of loving one another. Fact is, our focus is so much on maintaining order (crowd control) within the four walls of a “church,” we are inclined to forget that WE are the Church. Friends, we’re human BEings, not human DOings. Let’s BE the church; it’s NOT something you “do.” Frankly, all too often, we settle for appearing to be good “rule-followers” and prefer that all new converts give that same impression in our churches as an inadequate replacement for true discipleship. We can, and must, do better. There you go, ladies. Thou art loosed! Now, let’s all get busy about our Father’s business! Need pastoral counseling and prayer? Coin Collecting - How Many Is Too Many?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By John P. Shields To keep my coin collecting efforts alive and growing; I started a small coin business to perpetuate my interests without draining all my resources. Unfortunately, the revenue generated is never enough to satisfy the constant need for more coins. If that isnt bad enough, every week or so some new interest comes along which adds to the burden? Almost like that pretty new secretary in the office. Well, not quite. Part of this business is maintaining a substantial inventory that can be drawn upon depending on the wants of the customers. And having multiple examples of any given coin is a constant effort. To me, there is nothing worse than a customers request for a date or mint that is sold out. But if it happens to be a really neat coin (arent they all); I bet there is one sitting in my personal inventory. For purposes of this article, how many examples of the 1909 VDB Lincoln cent do you have? Most collectors would be content to own one but I have four; two in general inventory, one in my personal collection and one stashed away as reserve. These arent expensive coins to acquire and they dont sit around long enough to collect dust. And just because I keep one in reserve doesnt mean that I want to sell it. Each of the four 09 VDB examples have distinct characteristics that gave it special placement in the collection. Ok, the two in general inventory are nice brown F12 grades; the one in reserve is Very Good. The fourth example is a beautiful Red AU and you know where I keep it. If I had my way, I wouldnt sell any. The circulation figures for the 09 VDB arent staggering but with 27,995,000 minted, I dont think there will be a shortage anytime soon. My friend, a financial manager tells me business is business but Im not a businessman. I like coins, plain and simple. Ive been fighting this for years. Coin dealers who dont understand this, view coins as a commodity or a sales unit. If you ask them, they pretty much all began as novice collectors. And somewhere along the road, their mindset changed. To keep the business afloat, I sell complete collections of Lincoln cents on a regular basis. Whether its mail order or auction, they do sell well and at fair prices. So I have to keep a substantial inventory available at any given time. Having financial and storage space limitations, I have to restrict the quantity of coins maintained for any given type, year and mint. Most of the coins are in 2×2s ready for sale while an in-work portion is kept in individual plastic tubes. Its like having two separate inventories of the same thing. The 2×2s are for the better grades while the tubes hold the coins that just havent made it yet. Tracking the numbers is updated on a spreadsheet so I know what is needed versus what there is too many of. Yes, I admit that having fifteen 1964 uncirculated cents or twelve 1953s wheats may be without good cause. On a frequent basis, if I see the quantity for any particular year/mint go beyond some imaginary number, Ill sit down and examine the entire lot. The thinking is to keep only the better pieces. Well, they are all better pieces or I wouldnt have them to begin with. Maybe it was the grade or the toning or simply because I needed it at the time. Culling through a collection isnt as bad as you might think. If I do a thorough enough job, the end result is a mix lot of wonderful coins that another collector might find of interest. And sharing the fun of coin collecting is a good thing. And if all else fails, there is special storage just for Excess Inventory. I have my limitations too. A Harvard Law School Takes a look at Prenuptial Agreements

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Jeffrey Broobin What is The Reason that Most People, Dont Have a Prenuptial Agreement? A recent release of a paper by a Harvard Law School Olin Fellow explains that about 5 percent of married people have such an agreement, although the facts are that more then 50 percent of marriages end up in a divorce. This Harvard Law graduate explains what she has discovered. What Inspired Her to Research the Facts on Prenuptial Agreements? The facts are that more then half of marriages terminate and these once loving couples end up in divorce court, and a microscopic 5 percent have prenuptial agreements in place. Most of the perspective mates upon deliberation decide that if they bring the possibility of a prenup up to there would be intended, it suggests that they are planning for divorce, she concluded. She would investigate why couples were not protecting themselves with prenuptial agreements. What is the Reason Couples Contemplating Marriage, dont have a Prenuptial Agreement? The two main reasons that prevent people from asking their perspective partner to sign to a prenuptial agreement. First of all, as stated previously the majority of couples feel it predicts doom to suggest a prenuptial agreement to their perspective partner. Rumor has it that when Jennifer Lopez asked Ben Affleck to agree to a prenup, Ben Affleck ended the relationship. The other reason is the majority of couples believe that in spite of the statistics showing that more then half of all marriages end in divorce, it will never happen to them. They believe their there love will overcome any possible obstacles that can occur in their relationship and that their foundation is unbendable and more stable then most people, and divorce will never happen. Is it true as the courts have stated that prenuptial agreements are not absolutely contrary to promoting the stability of marriage? The reality is a Prenuptial Agreement can create a situation where the marriage will be more difficult to terminate rather then easier to end. You can design a prenup that states divorce can not happen unless a travesty has occurred, like being unfaithful or whatever you decide is important as a couple. And in contrast, the majority of states accept no fault divorce. Is it a fact that when prenups have additional instruction besides divisions of assets and state specific provisions when a divorce can occur, be upheld in court. To the best of my understanding this type of Prenuptial Agreement has not been tested in divorce court. In past years every state insisted that a spouse show fault before a divorce could be granted. But there are states that accept an agreement for a “covenant marriage” where one spouse will be required to show fault before filing for divorce. It would be unlikely that any court would limit a couples prenup because it has requirements for a divorce. Are children of divorce more likely to have a Prenuptial Agreement before they marry? Shocking as it seems, the answer is no! As stated previously the reasons couples dont have a prenup in place is not logical but emotional. Neither partner wants to create a situation that predicts doom. There are also other significant factors that should be mentioned. 1) If one of the partners has wealth, it is likely they will insist on a prenup. If you are married it is unlikely you will ask for a prenup. 3) Women will usually not insist on a prenup. Would you suggest that Prenuptial Agreements be Mandatory? It is important to understand why a prenuptial agreement is a win, win situation for both parties. After examining the research above, I would recommend a prenup. A mandatory prenuptial agreement would be beneficial to couples. It would eliminate that uncomfortable discussion of bringing up the matter because everyone would be required to deal with it as a matter of law, even if they feel they will never divorce. Also the practice may eliminate unrealistic optimism of what the future may bring. Since everyone that marries will have a prenuptial agreement it will create a smoother transition into marriage. If this law was in place perhaps Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck would still be together? 7 Keys for Reducing Calories While Eating Out

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Here are seven tips for getting the calories out of restaurant meals while still ordering your favorites. 1. Say NO to Super Sizing. The size you ordered is already too big. Stop super sizing and you’ll save money. Better still, order one dinner and ask for an extra plate. Many restaurants will do this for a dollar or two, and it’s well worth it. Then share the meal with your friend and you split the cost straight down the middle. Another option is to order from the so called “appetizer” menu. Two people could order three entrees, one dessert and split the whole thing and it’s still a ton of food! 2. Skip the Bread and Rolls. Most family restaurants still serve a bread basket with your meal. Unless it’s a fresh baked loaf or some really special bread, just skip it. You don’t need to fill up on ordinary bread when you’re paying good money for a meal. Just ask for it to be taken away if you can’t resist, but frankly, you’re an adult, you can resist, if you want to. You can simply choose not to put a roll on your plate. Try it, just once and see if you don’t walk out of that restaurant feeling strangely powerful. If you can’t skip the rolls, at least skip the butter. That’s right. Eat it plain. Whole grain bread is delicious all by itself. 3. Stop Ordering Drinks. Soft drinks are a huge cash cow for restaurants. For pennies they sell you a squirt of syrup and carbonated water and act like they’re doing you a big favor by only charging you $1.29 for a giant 64 ounce soda. Start saving those dollars. Especially if you’re ordering “to go” skip the drink. If you’re eating it there, ask for water, or at least switch to diet drinks. Never drink “fat pop.” 4. Slow Down You Eat Too Fast! What’s the rush? Take your time, savor the moment, enjoy the flavors. A big part of getting in touch with your hunger signals and learning to eat what really will satisfy is learning to recognize the subtle signs of hunger. You won’t know when you’re approaching satisfaction if you’ve gobbled everything down in five minutes. Take a bite then notice how many times do you chew before you start wanting to swallow? Once, twice? Make an effort to chew your food and your body will be much happier. A very large part of digestion begins in your mouth, not to mention you’ll get much more pleasure if you let the food linger. 5. Trim Visible Fat and Skin. I know, you really love the skin–of course you do, it tastes good, it should, it’s pure fat. Do you want to get leaner, or do you want to eat fat? You choose. I never eat chicken skin and never eat the visible fat hanging off a steak, good taste or no. You have to decide what you want more, the second’s worth of pleasure of a yummy taste, or a lifetime of carrying around an extra 40 lbs? I know this is counter to the low carb crowd’s belief that fat is good, carbs are evil, but I’ve maintained an 80 pound weight loss for 18 years without dieting and I don’t eat visible fat or skin. Enough said. 6. Ask for a Doggie Bag at the Beginning of Meal. When the food is served, immediately portion off some to take home for tomorrow. Most restaurants in the US serve way too much. There is no law you have to eat it all. Do this frequently and soon you’ll find you’re getting an extra lunch out of that meal. 7. Read Restaurant Confidential by Michael F. Jacobson and Jayne Hurley, and start checking out how many calories you’re really eating. If you eat out frequently and you carry extra weight, then that’s probably the problem right there. This little book can help you realize why it seems you don’t eat that much yet you can’t lose any weight. Hardees recently introduced a new burger that clocks in at just under 1200 calories all by itself! Now that’s frightening. If you really want to get a handle on your weight problem, look first to where you eat, second at what you eat, and third how much you eat. Where, What and How Much? Try these steps choosing one tip at a time, and see how easily you can take some of the calories out of restaurant food. Why Brazilian Diet Pills Have Become and Overnight Sensation: The Hidden Danger

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Danna Schneider Brazilian Diet Pills Fad - Buyer Beware Anyone familiar with the latest diet pills and methods has probably heard of the latest concern (or frenzy) on the weightloss market: Brazilian Diet Pills. Brazilian Diet Pills, specifically certain brands, seem to have been wreaking havoc on people’s health around the world. And yet people are still searching for them on the internet in hopes of shedding weight unusually fast. Let’s start from the beginning. A Brazilian company began marketing a particular “all natural” diet pill which had recommended dosages of a specific color coded pill to be taken in the morning, and a specific color coded pill to be taken at night. The dosages are varied according to where you are in your weight loss goals, as well as what your individual preferences or health issue are. These diet pills are still marketed as a “Magic Pill”. We all know there is no such thing. We want to believe that, which is why this product has seen some interest, but it quite simply is not true - and not without its price. My prediction is, the FDA will get wind of this fairly soon, and put a ban or strict limitations on this product, just as they did with Ephedra. The signs are all around. Women are reporting on forums that people they know have taken the Brazilian Diet Pill and while they have dropped significant amounts of weight in a short period, many people have suffered fainting spells, heart palpitations and even cardiac arrests, presumably linked to the ingestion of this weightloss product. An analysis on the pills has shown trace amounts of illegal amphetamines, as well as prescription antidepressants and even a tranquilizer in the night time pills, to counteract the effects of the speed you’ve taken during the day in the daytime formula, so that you can actually sleep. The really sad part of this is, the product is marketed as “Blended with Natural Herbs from the Rainforest”, when in fact chemical analysis has shown man made and extremely dangerous and volatile substances. Some people do know about the substances in this product, and due to the societal pressure to be thin, have still chosen to purchase and use it, in hopes of quickly slimming down. A word of caution: While this product may in fact help you to quickly shed unwanted excess pounds, it also has a real potential to become addictive, since it contains addictive controlled substances (amphetamines - or speed) which the human body becomes accustomed to, and starts to need more and more of just to sustain the weight loss and appetite loss. My advice is, if you really want to lose weight, and you want to be safe - stay away from these Brazilian Diet products. We are just now beginning to see the harmful and even life threatening effects, and I believe we may even see government agency intervention soon if the reports of extreme side effects keep coming in. If you have taken this product and have experienced negative effects, you may want to contact the FDA or even the Better Business Bureau. On the contrary, if you have taken one of these products and had exceptional results without a wink of side effects, by all means get that information out to the right people as well. A good alternative to this type of fad product is to just go for what you know is safe. There are some EXCELLENT and very safe, non-addictive diet aids (for example safe herbal alternatives to Fen Phen) on the market today that really are 100% natural and really do reduce your appetite and help you lose the weight you need to quickly and effectively. And, you don’t put it right back on when you stop the product. That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it!
